The experience behind the advice

Helexian AI is new. The experience behind it isn't.

When you hand part of your business to someone, you deserve to know what's behind the advice. Helexian AI is a small practice — me, Dean Williams, plus specialists I bring in when a job needs them. It's a young practice, built on more than 20 years spent getting technology change to actually stick, in organisations from ten people to eighteen thousand. Here's some of that, in plain English.

The short version

I've sat where you sit

Between the big roles, I built and ran two of my own product brands — designing the products, manufacturing them overseas, shipping worldwide, doing the marketing, and looking after customers. I carried the risk, wore every hat, and eventually made the hard, unglamorous call to wind them down when the numbers stopped adding up. My parents ran their own small business for about 30 years, too. So when I talk about the hours admin steals from an owner's week, it isn't theory.

Getting people to actually use it

When the country locked down in 2020, I was part of the team that moved around 18,000 staff to working from home in a matter of days — with no plan to start from, and no break in the service they provided to the public. It earned a Secretary's Award. Moving that many people that fast is almost entirely a people problem, not a technology one.

Why it matters to you: buying the tool is the easy 10%. Getting your team to use it is the other 90%, and that's the part I know best.

Growing something by bringing people along

Earlier on, I looked after a National Digital Service and helped grow it from 5 government agencies using it to more than 50. That growth came from patient adoption work: onboarding people, earning trust, and making the thing genuinely easy to say yes to.

Why it matters to you: the same instinct — make it easy, prove it works, bring people with you — is exactly what a small business needs when it takes on something new.

Measure first, then scale

The habit I've built over 20 years is simple: understand how things really work now, prove a change is worth it before committing to it, and don't scale anything until the numbers show it's working. I've used it to turn around stalled programs, steady projects heading off the rails, and write the business cases that decide whether something is worth doing at all.

Why it matters to you: it's the same approach I bring to a business your size. No scaling on a hunch. We agree the number up front, and we don't grow anything until it's earning its keep.
